black widow

Yes...that's right - a black widow. That's what we found on Friday afternoon when David and Camden were doing some yardwork. David was digging in the dirt and was finding earth worms and giving them to Cam to play with (there's a boy for ya). I just happened to look over at the dirt where he had been digging and saw a HUGE spider. I was so grossed out but had to get a closer look since it was so big. Then I saw it - the red hourglass on its abdomen. I could not believe there was a black widow spider in our yard! It's good to know that one of the most venomous spiders in NC is lurking around in our front yard where my sweet little boy plays. Who knows how many more there are out there. Just to give you some perspective - this thing was really huge - its abdomen was about the size of a marble. I know it's not huge compared to a tarantula or anything, but I still thought it was huge. I was going to put a picture of one on here, but I thought I'd spare you. :) You're welcome. I did decide to put the spider in a little tupperware bowl - with a lid of course - so Camden could check it out up close. David and I were both joking about how we felt itchy after we found that spider. Hopefully we won't be seeing any more of those things any time soon. :)

Wow! A good science lesson for the boys! God is protecting by sending the angels to cover you. By the way, you got your "spotlight" eyes from your Dad-he still can spot 4-leaf clovers in a patch of grass.

We have found them in the corners of the sandbox..one time, we caught a soon-to-be momma one and put her in a jar..next thing we know, she's made this huge egg sack..YUCK! All those little spiders would have been in my babies' sandbox! Instead, they all died. And I didn't have to cover science that day..

EW GROSS. I HATE SPIDERS.

Remember my Starbucks fiasco in the bathroom with the drop-down spider while I was... ahem... you know?

Well... happened again while I was feeding Levi Saturday morning- it was a HUGE spider and was literally 3 inches from my face making its way down from the ceiling. Total freak out session.

Is that thing still alive? Please tell me that you all decided NOT to send it with Camden to school :)

oh ick! I hate those things...Jacob had to kill one in our storage closet a while ago. Ugh. But I still they are cool - even if I look for them everytime I open our outside closet. Oh and here's the science teacher in me...but I think its great that you showed Camden what it looked like in the jar!! I think kids (especially boys) need to learn about the dangerous ones! Otherwise, their lack of fear towards spiders/bugs might backfire if they were to find one of these!! Anyways....

Oh and I loved your conversation with Camden posted below. Jacob and I laughed out loud at that one.
