Playing at the what?!
Raleigh closed a landfill that had been open and running for about 20 years. It was full, so they had to open a new one (in Holly Springs, I think?). Instead of wasting all the open land, they covered the landfill with a huge tarp, planted grass on top of it, and built a playground next to it. At first I was a little skeptical, but I just thought to myself that there would not be a playground next to a landfill if it wasn't safe. It was really fun, actually! It was neat to be able to explain to Camden what a landfill is all about and show him where it used to be.
There is the mountain of trash covered by grass. I don't know why I thought it was sort of creepy... the fact that there is THAT much trash under there. David said that they even dug a hole first, so it's most likely several hundred feet under the ground too.
If you live in North Raleigh, be sure to check out this place... it was a neat experience!

i know why its a little weird. to me, it would almost feel like i was on a playground at a cemetery. :) playing on ground over things that are buried. eerie.
yikes. i would be skeptical too... isn't that near my house? maybe we'll brave it. maybe.
but. CUTE pictures, love the one of the boys on the slide together!
That's funny, mostly because there's a forest preserve like that near where I grew up. There's a huge hill (well, huge for Illinois) and we always called it "Mount Trashmore" because it used to be a landfill, but I never really thought about it much, because it was never a landfill while I've been alive, it's always been a hill. We went tubing down it in the winter, and hiked up it all other times of the year. We'll have to go check this one out!
Em, just so you know - the actual playground isn't on the landfill, just next to it. So, not quite as freaky as you might think. :)
oh okay. good. so i guess no pieces of trash will wake from the dead and reach through the ground to grab small children. good. i was worried.
:)
ps, i'm kinda freaking myself out now.
Emily... that's totally creepy :) I think I need to go watch ... Care Bears or something now. :) hee hee
