out of town

Sorry the blog has been so quiet lately! We've been busy... and about to get even busier. We are heading to visit Nana and Pops in Texas on Tuesday and will be back the following Monday. We're looking forward to a break from our normal day-to-day routine. We are going to enjoy playing at N & P's house, driving around and looking at all the scenery (they live in Corpus Christi, right by the Gulf), and going to Houston to see where David grew up. We are excited. It will be Anderson's first time flying, and he doesn't have a seat so he will be in one of our laps the whole time. Does anyone who has flown with a one-year-old (or somewhere close to that age) have any advice on how to keep him happy/entertained the whole time? I've got my ideas, but I always welcome yours as well! Please pray for us to stay safe, and to enjoy our vacation and have it be as non-stressful as possible. :) Pictures will come when we return. Hope everyone has a great week!

Flying with a one-year old: ask people to pray! Try to fly during his normal nap time (or try to make sure he's tired, if your flight is already booked, which I'm sure it is!), so he'll sleep on your lap. Try (this is not always possible unless the flight is not full) to get a spot where there is an empty seat next to you so he can sleep/crawl around/bounce. Once you've reached cruising altitude, let him crawl around down by your feet. Don't take too many toys. Make sure you have a sippy cup with whatever he likes to drink (they bend the liquids rules for kids). Also, have snacks. Let him pull out the "security cards" and the magazines from the seat pockets. If you're flying Southwest, sit in the very back (well, second row from the back) of the plane - noise is drowned out back there, and then you won't have to feel in such a hurry to get off the plane when you land, you can take your time, make sure you have all your stuff, because nobody is behind you that you're holding up (also, you're more likely to have that extra seat if the flight isn't full) -again, only if you're flying Southwest.

(what airline are you flying?)

Sorry, that was a novel!

I did fly with Jonah when he was maybe 9 months old. If you can pick up a new toy to save for the airplane for both boys that could help, overpacking for the plane (snacks, diapers, outfits) and trying to get placed next to a empty seat.

thanks for the comments!!

Jenelle, we are flying Delta. We definitely will not have an empty seat next to us. We will have the three-in-a-row seats, each one of us using one. We have to get up at 5 in the morning, so I'm hoping he'll nap a lot of the flight. I've got tons of snacks and some little books, so hopefully we'll be in good shape. I appreciate all the advice!

This is what we did on our 9-hr flights:

- Bring new toys he's never seen and introduce them one by one.

- Snacks are a must, and bring your own. Don't rely on the stewardesses.

- Benadryl. Enough said.

- A sling is always helpful, especially in the airport and while rocking him to sleep in the plane, but only if he's used to it.

- I've read a lot about making them suck while taking off and landing, but my kids never had a problem with it. Still, its not a bad idea.

- Try to be seated first.

Good luck! I'm sure you guys will have an awesome time!
